Cuttack: Expressing serious concern over the fire mishap at a private nursing home in Cuttack Purighat, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi ordered a high-level probe and directed the Health Secretary and District Collector to shift patients to other health facilities and ensure their treatment.
The Odisha CM also announced that the state government will bear all treatment expenses of the patients.
The Chief Minister has directed the Director General of the Fire Department to ensure that the rules related to fire safety are strictly followed. He also emphasized that organisations that save patients’ lives need to be more aware of these issues.

A major fire broke out at a Radharaman nursing home under the Purighat police station this afternoon. The fire that broke out on the third floor of the nursing home, is believed to have erupted due to an electrical short circuit.
On receiving information, eight fire tenders reached the spot and brought the fire under control. Immediately, the patients were rescued and shifted to other health facilities.
As per reports, more than 10 critical patients were being treated in the ICU located on the third floor of the nursing home. Besides, many patients were being treated in general beds as well. However, this afternoon suddenly a fire broke out in the ICU due to an electrical short circuit and thick smoke engulfed the entire third floor.
Soon, firefighters reached the spot and patients from the ICU were rescued through fire lifts. Though the rescue operation was tardy due to heavy smoke, the firemen were able to rescue the patients. However, due to a lack of a sufficient number of ambulances, the patients were seen lying on the road out of the nursing home
After hours of ordeal, the firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control and later as many as 15 ambulances shifted the rescued patients to other private hospitals and SCB Medical College and Hospital.
As per information from the Fire Service Directorate, a total of 45 patients were evacuated safely. While 17 were admitted to SCB, 17 were admitted to Sishu Bhawan and 11 to private hospitals.
