Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted two remarkable grassroots initiatives from Odisha during the 124th edition of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, applauding their efforts in blending tradition with social empowerment and environmental awareness.

The Prime Minister lauded over 650 tribal women from Mayurbhanj district for reviving the traditional Santhali saree, which was once on the verge of fading into obscurity. Their collective efforts have not only preserved cultural heritage but also provided a sustainable livelihood. “These women are not just making cloth, they are carving their own identity,” PM Modi said, noting that their work has enabled them to earn thousands of rupees each month.

Modi also commended the Radhakrishna Sankirtan Mandali from Keonjhar district, led by Pramila Pradhan, for using devotional kirtans and bhajans to spread awareness about the dangers of forest fires. “Along with devotion, today, this group is also chanting the mantra of environmental protection,” he remarked. The troupe’s innovative approach involves weaving messages on environmental conservation into traditional songs, taking their awareness campaign from village to village.

“These examples remind us that our folk traditions are not relics of the past; they continue to inspire and give direction to society,” the Prime Minister added.
