Trump Repeats India-Pakistan Ceasefire Claim, Congress Seeks Debate on Pahalgam Attack

US President Donald Trump has once again asserted that he played a key role in stopping the recent conflict between India and Pakistan, claiming credit for brokering a ceasefire through trade pressure.

Speaking during a Republican event at the White House, Trump reiterated, “They were probably headed towards a nuclear war. Five jets were shot down. I called them and said — no more trade if you do this. And I stopped it.”

This marks the 25th time in 73 days that Trump has made the claim publicly, prompting a sharp political response in India.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised the Indian government, saying, “While Trump continues to trumpet his role in ending hostilities, the Prime Minister of India remains silent — absent from Parliament and focused only on foreign trips and undermining democratic institutions.”

Ramesh also accused the Modi government of avoiding accountability in Parliament, specifically over the deadly Pahalgam terror attack and India’s retaliatory Operation Sindoor. “There is still no commitment from the PM to speak on the matter or schedule a debate,” Ramesh posted on X.

Trump also claimed the US “wiped out” Iran’s nuclear capabilities and helped end the Kosovo-Serbia conflict, adding to a list of high-profile foreign interventions.

India, however, maintains that the May 10 ceasefire agreement with Pakistan was the result of direct military-level talks between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGsMO), initiated by Islamabad.

Following the May 7 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure across the Line of Control. After four days of intense drone and missile exchanges, both sides agreed to halt hostilities on May 10.

India has consistently rejected any foreign mediation in its bilateral matters with Pakistan. Prime Minister Modi, in a 35-minute phone call with Trump last month, reportedly reaffirmed that position unequivocally.
