The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued fresh summons to tech giants Google and Meta, directing them to appear on July 28 in connection with the ongoing investigation into the promotion of illegal betting and gambling applications.
Representatives of both companies had earlier requested a deferment of the original summons dated July 21, citing the need to gather relevant documentation. The ED aims to record their statements under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), probing the extent of their involvement in hosting betting advertisements on app stores and social media platforms.
The investigation also extends to celebrities and sports personalities who allegedly endorsed or promoted such apps. According to ED officials, these platforms may have misled users, leading to financial fraud and tax evasion amounting to crores of rupees.
Previously, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had cautioned digital outlets against carrying betting-related ads. However, persistent violations have prompted further scrutiny. ED officials now seek clarity on whether Google and Meta knowingly permitted these promotions and whether any direct benefit was accrued.
The tech companies are expected to provide detailed information about their advertising policies, vetting mechanisms, and involvement in enabling the spread of illegal gambling platforms.
