The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has demanded an explanation from the International Cricket Council (ICC) after the Indian national anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana,’ was mistakenly played instead of Australia’s ‘Advance Australia Fair’ during a Champions Trophy match at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The mix-up occurred on Saturday, just before the match between England and Australia.
The error was quickly identified, and the organizers promptly corrected it by playing the correct anthem. The incident, however, went viral on social media within moments.
In response to this incident, the PCB has asked the ICC for an official clarification, holding the council responsible for the error. This is not the first instance in the tournament where the PCB has sought explanations from the ICC. Earlier, they questioned the omission of Pakistan’s name from the official broadcast and the absence of India’s flag at the National Stadium in Karachi.
Adding to the complexity, India has opted not to play any of their matches in Lahore, choosing Dubai as their venue due to travel concerns. The Champions Trophy is being conducted in a hybrid model to accommodate various teams’ preferences, and this model will also be used for future ICC events, including the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025 and the Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026.
The PCB continues to address these issues with the ICC to ensure a smooth and respectful conduct of the tournament. The cricketing world now looks forward to how the ICC will respond to the PCB’s demands and ensure no further errors mar the prestigious tournament.
