Indore has once again been crowned India’s cleanest city, this time under the newly introduced “Super Swachh League Cities” category of the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 Awards. The recognition was presented by President Droupadi Murmu at an award ceremony in New Delhi on Thursday.

This marks yet another victory for Indore, which also topped the chart in the one-million-plus population category. It was followed by Surat, Navi Mumbai, and Vijayawada.

The Super League category, introduced in September 2024 by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, recognises cities that have consistently ranked among the top performers in previous years and remained in the top 20% in their population category.

In other categories:

  • Noida was declared the cleanest among cities with a population between 3–10 lakh.

  • New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) topped the 50,000–3 lakh population group.

  • Vita (Maharashtra) led among towns with 20,000–50,000 residents.

  • Panchgani was the cleanest city in the under-20,000 population segment.

The Swachh Survekshan Awards, a flagship initiative of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), began in 2016 with just 73 cities. In 2024-25, it covered 4,500 urban local bodies, making it the world’s largest urban sanitation survey.

Over 3,000 assessors inspected every city ward for 45 days, covering more than 11 lakh households. Public participation played a key role, with over 14 crore people engaged through on-ground surveys, the Swachhata App, MyGov, and social media.

The rankings were determined based on 54 indicators across 10 parameters, offering a holistic picture of cleanliness, waste management, and citizen feedback.

Union Ministers Manohar Lal Khattar, MoS Tokhan Sahu, and MoHUA Secretary Srinivas K were present during the event that recognised 78 awardees across population categories.
