Tehran: Harmilan Bains and Jyothi Yarraji won gold medals as India made a shining start to the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2024 on Saturday in Tehran.
Harmilan Bains won gold in the women’s 1500m event with a timing of 4:29.55 seconds in the women’s 1500m final. Jyothi Yarraji registered a new national record and personal best to take gold in the women’s 60m hurdles with a timing of 8.12 seconds.
Two golds are twice as many gold medals India managed to win in the 2023 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships when Tajinderpal Singh Toor was the only Indian athlete to finish on the top of the podium in Astana. Overall India had won eight medals in 2023 including six silver medals and one bronze.
In the evening, reigning Asian Champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor will take part in the men’s shot put final apart from Ashok Kumar Saroj in the 1500m final and Tejas Shirse in the 60m hurdles heat.
