Following the tragic death of Fakir Mohan College student Soumyashree, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organised a protest demonstration at Vani Vihar in Bhubaneswar, demanding swift justice and systemic reforms across educational institutions.
Soumyashree, reportedly subjected to prolonged mental harassment, had attempted self-immolation—a shocking incident that triggered widespread outrage. The ABVP compared the case to the infamous Nirbhaya case and called for a new legislation titled “Soumyashree Law” to ensure women’s safety within campuses.
Protesters also raised concerns over the internal committee’s investigation report and demanded the formation of legally mandated permanent Internal Complaints Committees (ICC) in every educational institution. ABVP questioned the legitimacy of the report and demanded transparency in the inquiry process.
Adding to the tension, allegations surfaced that certain student Congress (NSUI) leaders incited the victim through social media. ABVP called for their arrest, presenting screenshots and digital evidence to support their claims.
The demand for justice has ignited conversations at the state and national levels, urging both governments to intervene and ensure safety and accountability within educational spaces.
