Odisha’s jatra industry is once again in the spotlight, with popular actor Piyush Tripathy issuing a direct challenge to the Jatra Owners’ Association.

In an open letter, Piyush has given the association a seven-day ultimatum to decide on his future in the industry. If no response is received within the timeframe, he has declared that he will align himself with another troupe of his choosing.

Despite taking a year-long break, Piyush recently performed during the final rehearsal of the drama Bholashankar at Singhavahini Akhada in Baliapal, Balasore. In his letter, he questioned the association’s lack of transparency, particularly regarding restrictions on artist mobility and inconsistencies in contract enforcement.

Piyush reaffirmed his commitment to the Singhabahini Jatra Party with a five-year contract starting from 2026-27. However, he signaled that continued loyalty depends on fair treatment. Sanjeev Padhy, the party’s owner, acknowledged Piyush’s stance, stating that mistakes require penance, but freedom must follow once that period ends.

The letter, which also indirectly referenced notable industry figures including Pramod Swain (Surjya Mandira), artist couple Kahna and Tiki, and actress Namita Bhuyan, pointed to alleged double standards in the treatment of different artists.

Association member Prasannajit Nayak confirmed that the letter has been received and that both the president and secretary will respond after reviewing its contents. Meanwhile, Association President Bharat Bhusan Deo said a decision on Piyush’s future will be made in 2026-27 after thorough discussion.

With tensions mounting, the Odisha jatra community now awaits the association’s formal response to Piyush Tripathy’s bold stance.
