Odisha has recorded a rise in COVID-19 cases, with the total reaching 49 as of Sunday, according to the state’s Public Health Director, Dr. Nilakantha Mishra.

The state identified 11 new cases on Sunday—7 in the morning and 4 by evening—bringing the active case count to 34 after 15 recoveries. Cuttack district accounts for 22 of these cases, with 5 patients hospitalised and 17 in home quarantine.

Dr. Prashant Hota, Cuttack’s Chief Medical Officer, emphasised that the situation remains manageable, advising symptomatic individuals to stay home, wear masks, avoid crowds, and seek medical care.

Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar has conducted emergency mock drills and prepared a dedicated isolation ward with oxygen facilities. Deputy Superintendent Dr. Dhananjay Das confirmed that ICU patients are being tested for COVID-19, and strict protocols, including mask mandates and oxygen cylinder stockpiling, have been enforced since Sunday. The hospital is adhering to government guidelines, ensuring robust testing and preparedness.

Health experts identified this variant as a less severe Omicron subvariant, first detected in August 2023, causing mild symptoms like fever, cough, and cold. However, it poses risks to the elderly and those with comorbidities, who are urged to follow COVID-19 guidelines diligently.

The Union Health Ministry has directed states to maintain adequate healthcare infrastructure, including oxygen cylinders, medical beds, ventilators, and essential medicines. The ministry also advises hand sanitisation, using masks during coughing or sneezing, avoiding crowded areas if unwell, and consulting specialists for respiratory issues.

Authorities have cautioned against believing rumours and emphasised preparedness to manage the situation effectively.
