Bhubaneswar: State capital will soon be free of beggars as the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to rehabilitate the people involved in begging in the city. Moreover, BMC is also planning to shift homeless and destitute people to shelter homes.
BMC will initiate a drive soon, following which teams will identify the beggars in the city and shift them to shelter homes after which attempts will be made to make them self-reliant by launching various programmes.
A plan to set up 100-bedded rehabilitation centres at all regional offices in the city is currently underway, BMC Commissioner Prem Chandra Choudhury informed.
The rehabilitation centres will be operated by professional organisations.
In 2018, the Odisha government had launched the ‘Sahaya’ scheme. The livelihood support is given under Sahaya scheme. Under it, beggars are rehabilitated by providing self-employment.
