Khurda: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed disciplinary action against the Begunia Tehsildar in Khordha district over allegations of unauthorized tree felling for a road construction project under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.

Residents’ Complaint & NGT Investigation
Residents of Chima village, Begunia, approached the NGT, alleging that over 100 trees, including fruit-bearing and mature species, were felled without approval from the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Khordha. They claimed that tree cutting was not part of the approved plan, leading to an environmental and financial loss.

Following the complaint, the NGT constituted a committee to investigate the matter. The bench, led by Justice B. Amit Sthalekar and Judicial Member Dr. Arun Kumar Verma, reviewed the findings and confirmed evidence of illegal tree cutting, identifying 12 tree stumps during site inspections.

NGT’s Order & Action Against Officials
In its final order, issued on January 29, the Tribunal observed gross negligence on the part of the Begunia Tehsildar for failing to report the illegal activity in time. The NGT stated:

“There has been a lack of promptitude, sincerity, and devotion towards duty on the part of the Tehsildar, leading to a grave loss of revenue to the exchequer.”

As a result, the Tribunal mandated disciplinary action against the official.

Findings & Further Investigation
Reports from the Tangi Range Officer and the NGT-constituted committee confirmed the presence of tree stumps from species like Fasi, Kochila, and Mai, while evidence suggested the felling of Kasi, Neem, Sal, Jackfruit, and Aksia.

The case has sparked renewed scrutiny of environmental violations, with authorities now investigating the extent of damage and potential further legal action.
