India vice-captain Shubman Gill has achieved a significant milestone by hitting his seventh ODI century against England in Ahmedabad.

This achievement also makes him the fastest player to accumulate 2500 runs in ODI cricket. Gill’s outstanding performance in the match has received widespread praise, further establishing him as one of India’s most promising young talents.

Opening the batting, Gill secured his century off 95 balls after England elected to field first. The 25-year-old also became the quickest player to hit 2500 ODI runs during his 50th match in this format, surpassing South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who reached the milestone in 51 innings. While batting in his 131st innings across all formats, Gill also crossed the 5,000 international runs mark during this inning.

After scoring 87 and 60 in the first two matches of the series, Gill climbed to second place in the most recent ICC ODI batting rankings, overtaking Indian captain Rohit Sharma. He has a strong record while batting in Ahmedabad, where he posted his highest T20I score of an unbeaten 126 against New Zealand in February 2023. In March of the same year, he garnered his first Test century at this venue, scoring 128 off 251 balls in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

As the captain of the Gujarat Titans, he boasts an impressive average of nearly 80 at this ground over nine innings, making Ahmedabad the second venue where he has amassed over 400 runs, the first being the Harare Stadium in Zimbabwe.

Fastest to 2500 ODI runs

50 innings – Shubman Gill
51 innings – Hashim Amla
52 innings – Imam-ul-Haq
