The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Odisha government on Saturday, accusing it of severely mismanaging the state’s disaster response framework.
In a press statement, BJD Media Coordinator Dr. Lenin Mohanty alleged that the current administration’s failure to provide timely relief and assistance over the past 28 months has exposed critical flaws in its emergency preparedness.
The BJD highlighted a glaring disparity between the government’s official data and the harsh ground reality, pointing to the tragic loss of lives during recent floods and cyclones. According to the party, the BJP has reduced disaster management to mere political propaganda and hollow announcements, neglecting the essential fieldwork required to protect citizens and distribute prompt aid.
Drawing a sharp contrast, Dr. Mohanty recalled the globally acclaimed disaster management model developed under the leadership of former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Following the devastating 1999 Super Cyclone, the BJD government prioritized human lives above all else, constructing hundreds of multipurpose cyclone shelters and implementing robust early warning evacuation systems. This proactive approach led to the highly successful ‘Zero Casualty’ principle, a standard of excellence that garnered official praise from the United Nations.
“Extensive preparedness before disasters, swift action during emergencies, and the provision of adequate relief, compensation, and rehabilitation are the pillars of genuine disaster management,” stated Dr. Mohanty. He expressed deep concern that the ‘Zero Casualty’ objective, once synonymous with Odisha’s administrative resilience, is now gradually being compromised under the present regime.
The BJD emphasized that safeguarding lives must remain the paramount objective during any natural calamity. Guided by the foundational principle that ‘Every Life Is Precious,’ the party urged the state government to move beyond administrative meetings and take immediate, tangible steps to fortify the state’s disaster management infrastructure.
As extreme weather events continue to pose significant threats to vulnerable coastal communities, the BJD firmly stated that the safety of the people cannot be compromised by administrative delays.
The opposition’s demand underscores the urgent need for the BJP government to realign its focus and execute a proactive, on-the-ground action plan before the next crisis strikes.
