Tensions have reached a boiling point across the region as Israel orders a full closure of the West Bank following a violent morning confrontation near Hebron on Friday.
The incident, which left at least five people injured—some critically—has triggered immediate emergency measures and heightened political stakes just days before the country’s pivotal parliamentary election.
According to the military, Israeli soldiers shot and killed two Palestinian men who allegedly launched an attack near the Yehuda Junction. Officials claimed the armed individuals carried an M16 rifle and a handgun, though specific details regarding their intended target have not been officially disclosed. Emergency responders reported that active gunfire was still ongoing when medical teams arrived to evacuate the wounded to hospitals in Israel.
In response to the escalation, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an emergency meeting with his Security Cabinet and top defence officials. Blaming Hamas for orchestrating broader threats, Netanyahu praised the military for thwarting what he described as a major plot against civilians.
“Our brave soldiers thwarted this attack with courage and determination,” Netanyahu stated, warning that militant factions might attempt to influence the upcoming election outcome.
The security fallout was swift. Shortly after the cabinet briefing, Israeli authorities ordered security forces to immediately cordon off Hebron and prepare for a comprehensive closure across the entire West Bank starting Friday. This marks the fourth time in the past month that Israel has implemented widespread movement restrictions, shutting gates and checkpoints connecting Palestinian villages to major thoroughfares. While Palestinian movement remains severely restricted, Israeli roads in the territory remain open to settlers and drivers, who may face localised traffic delays.
Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir voiced strong support for the crackdown, asserting that security personnel and settler safety outweigh standard freedom of movement. Meanwhile, simultaneous security sweeps across the West Bank yielded dozens of arrests of individuals allegedly affiliated with Hamas and Islamic Jihad, alongside weapon seizures including M16 rifles and submachine guns.
As voters prepare to head to the polls next Tuesday to decide whether to grant Netanyahu another term or shift political directions, the convergence of security crackdowns and electoral pressure has cast a tense shadow over the nation. Authorities have confirmed that a full investigation into the morning’s events remains underway.
