Authorities in Pakistan have dismantled an international cyber fraud network accused of using artificial intelligence-generated identities and forged travel documents to exploit Canada’s banking system.

According to investigators, the network consisted of seven individuals, including four Indian nationals based in Canada and three Pakistani nationals operating from Pakistan. The group allegedly created fake identities using AI-generated photographs and forged passports to open bank accounts and secure credit facilities from Canadian financial institutions.

Officials said the Pakistan-based members were responsible for generating the fabricated identities and remotely opening bank accounts. Once the accounts and credit cards were approved, the Canada-based members allegedly received the cards, exhausted the available credit limits through purchases and transactions, and then discarded the cards to avoid detection.

The operation came to light following an investigation by Pakistan’s National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), which had reportedly been monitoring the group’s activities for some time. Authorities conducted raids in Lahore on October 19, leading to the arrest of the suspects and the seizure of evidence linked to the fraud scheme.

Investigators believe the case highlights the growing threat posed by artificial intelligence in cybercrime, particularly in the creation of highly convincing synthetic identities capable of bypassing traditional verification systems.

The incident has raised concerns among financial institutions and cybersecurity experts about the increasing sophistication of AI-enabled financial fraud. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full extent of the operation and identify any additional accomplices or victims.
