In a swift and decisive operation, the Khordha Model Police Station solved a brutal murder case within 48 hours, arresting five individuals linked to the violent killing of a local resident following a prolonged rivalry over control of local bus collection operations.
The victim, identified as Sushil Behera, alias Sisua, a resident of Bhaliabadi village, was brutally attacked on the afternoon of October 19 at around 4:30 PM near a brick kiln along National Highway 16 in Totapada.
According to police sources, the Model Police Station Inspector and SDPO Pankaj Majhi rushed to the spot shortly after the attack. Sisua was rescued in critical condition and immediately rushed to the Khordha District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Following a formal written complaint filed by the deceased’s wife, the police registered a case (Case No. 623/26) under sections 103(1), 61(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.
Investigation revealed that a long-standing dispute had been brewing between Sisua and the prime accused regarding control over money collection from buses at the Khordha New Bus Stand. The feud escalated on October 18 when an altercation broke out between both factions, leading to cross-cases registered at the Khordha Model Police Station (Case Nos. 621/26 and 622/26).
On October 19, as Sisua was returning on his motorcycle from Totapada toward Bhaliabadi, the group ambushed him near the brick kiln and brutally assaulted him with sharp weapons, leading to his death on the spot.
During the investigation, police apprehended five men involved in the conspiracy and execution: Jitendra Behera alias Jitu (50) – Prime Conspirator, Bhaliabadi; Pradeep Behera alias Daka (27) – Bhaliabadi; Yashobanta Behera alias Nanda (19) – Bhaliabadi; Kanhu Charan Kandi alias Kalia alias Kalu (32) – Bhaliabadi; and Dibakar Maharana alias Raja (30) – Gandhipadia, Khordha (originally from Gadamanatri, Begunia).
Based on confessions from the accused, police recovered the primary murder weapons—a sword and a hollow steel pipe fitted with a chain wheel at the head—which had been dumped in a local pond (Hatapokhari). Additionally, officers seized two Hero Glamour motorcycles (OR-02-BQ-1633 and OD-33F-5150) used during the crime.
All five accused were forwarded to the court on October 20.
