Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken out following his abrupt departure from the national team camp late last month, revealing a sensational eight-point statement that head coach Jorge Jesus had allegedly agreed—and then failed—to deliver publicly.
The rift, which culminated in Ronaldo leaving the squad ahead of their fixture in Denmark, stems from broken promises regarding his playing time and public defense of his professional conduct.
The Norway Warm-Up Incident
According to Ronaldo, an initial arrangement was made with Jesus to manage his physical workload during the UEFA Nations League campaign, with no expectation for him to feature against Norway or Denmark. However, prior to the match against Norway in Oslo, Jesus asked if Ronaldo would be open to a 30-minute appearance off the bench.
Despite warming up for the entire second half after agreeing to the request, Ronaldo was left as an unused substitute—a move he described as the first breach of trust.
”The posture had nothing to do with our meeting,” Ronaldo stated on Instagram, expressing disappointment over the aggressive tone taken in the subsequent press conference.
The Unspoken “Pelé-Maradona” Admission
To resolve the rising tension, a meeting was arranged involving Ronaldo, Jesus, and Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho. A formal eight-point document was drafted for Jesus to address the media before the Denmark game in Copenhagen.
The most striking clause in the proposed statement acknowledged Jesus’ error in benching the superstar:
”I made a mistake by putting someone of the stature of Pelé or Maradona on to warm up and then not putting him in the game. If it were today I would not do it,” clause six of the document read.
The agreed points also emphasized that Ronaldo had been “exemplary, loyal and professional,” whilst reaffirming Jesus’ strong desire to keep him in the national setup.
Looking Ahead Despite the Fallout
When Jesus failed to read the agreed text at the press conference, Ronaldo decided to exit the camp to avoid further breaches of trust. Despite the controversy, the veteran icon apologized to fans and teammates for leaving, stating he is willing to accept any suspension handed down by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and remains fully committed to representing his country in the future.
