India has made remarkable strides in its energy sector, as highlighted in the recently released Energy Statistics India 2025 by the National Statistics Office (NSO).

The report showcases India’s unwavering commitment to sustainable growth and energy efficiency, revealing significant achievements in renewable energy, per capita consumption, and overall energy supply.

With an estimated renewable energy potential of 2,109,655 MW as of March 2024, India stands as a global leader. Wind power dominates with 55% of this potential, followed by solar energy and large hydro projects. Over half of this renewable potential remains untapped, presenting promising opportunities for future developments.

The report also celebrates India’s growth in renewable electricity generation, with installed capacity rising from 81,593 MW in 2015 to an impressive 198,213 MW in 2024, marking a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.36%. Energy consumption per capita also increased consistently, showcasing a CAGR of 2.55%, reflecting India’s advancing standard of living.

Furthermore, India’s efficiency in electricity transmission saw a significant improvement, with losses decreasing from 23% in 2015 to just 17% in 2024. Notably, petroleum product consumption jumped from 174,728 KToE to 311,822 KToE during the same period.

This milestone report also introduced a groundbreaking chapter on Energy Account, aligning with international standards. The chapter provides insights into asset accounts and supply-use tables for recent fiscal years, highlighting India’s commitment to innovative energy solutions.

As the nation moves forward, the government reaffirms its vision for a sustainable, energy-efficient future, bolstered by data-driven strategies and policies.
