A moderate earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the Leh–Ladakh region on Sunday morning, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremor was felt across parts of the northwestern Himalayan region, which is known for its seismic activity.
The NCS said the earthquake occurred at 11:51 am IST. Its epicentre was located in Leh–Ladakh, at a depth of 171 kilometres, indicating a deep-focus quake.
No Immediate Damage Reported
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property, officials said. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged residents to remain alert, particularly in view of the possibility of aftershocks.
The Leh–Ladakh region lies along the seismically active Himalayan belt, making it vulnerable to earthquakes of varying intensity. Emergency response teams have been kept on standby as a precautionary measure.
Government Advisory Issued
Officials advised people to avoid panic and follow standard safety guidelines, including staying away from weak structures and monitoring updates from official agencies. Residents have also been encouraged to use verified platforms, including government disaster alert systems, for real-time information.
