In a startling disclosure in the Odisha Legislative Assembly, State Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena revealed that 460 school buses in Bhubaneswar are running without valid fitness certificates.
Responding in writing, the Minister informed the House that 1,484 school buses are registered in the city, but nearly one-third lack the mandatory fitness clearance. Despite this, these buses continue to ferry students daily, raising serious safety concerns.
The Transport Department has formed special enforcement teams to conduct regular inspections, and e-challans are being issued to violators, Jena added.
Further highlighting the ageing vehicle issue, the Minister stated that 3,322 buses over 10 years old are still plying on various routes across Odisha.
The revelation has triggered concerns among parents and citizens, who are urging authorities to ensure strict action and prioritize the safety of school children traveling in these buses.
