Manisha, 24, swapped Delhi’s chaos for the serenity of Manali and has embraced a simpler, healthier lifestyle while working remotely.
Almost a year ago, Manisha made the life-changing decision to leave Delhi, citing fatigue with city life and its pollution. Today, she works remotely as a brand specialist for an Indian D2C wellness company and lives in a 1RK apartment in Manali, managing her monthly expenses on just ₹25,000.
The move to Manali
Originally from Kolkata, Manisha graduated in English from Delhi University in 2022. She spent two years working in Delhi before securing a remote role in 2024 that allowed her to relocate to Himachal Pradesh’s scenic hills.
“I’ve always loved travelling and the hills. My first solo trip to Jibhi in Himachal in 2023 was life-changing,” she said.
Her decision was also motivated by the desire for better health. “Delhi with its pollution did not suit me. I wanted a different kind of lifestyle,” she added.
Finding a home
Manisha found her apartment without agents or brokers, walking around Manali and speaking to locals. The rent is ₹15,000 a month, with additional expenses like groceries, WiFi, and electricity totaling roughly ₹10,000.
Even with these costs, she estimates she saves around 50% of her salary, which she channels into mutual funds, her PPF, and an emergency fund.
Health and lifestyle benefits
Living in Manali has had a noticeable impact on Manisha’s health. “I’ve struggled with chronic sinus issues all my life. Since moving here, my symptoms have largely subsided,” she said. She also walks more, as commuting is minimal and public transport is rarely needed.
The trade-offs
While the move has clear benefits, Manisha cautions others that living in the hills comes with its own challenges. Domestic help is scarce, and daily chores are largely self-managed. Quick-commerce services exist but are not as instant as in a metro city.
“Life here is slower and requires more self-reliance,” she said.
For Manisha, the shift from Delhi to Manali has been rewarding — financially, physically, and mentally — and she encourages others to weigh the trade-offs carefully before making a similar move.
