Odisha reported 153 cases of weight and measurement fraud over the past two years, Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra announced in the Assembly.
He presented the figures while responding to a question, thereby drawing attention to rising concerns over consumer rights violations.
The minister explained that officials carried out 3,12,326 inspections during the two-year period. As a result, authorities registered thousands of cases against traders who violated consumer protection laws. Moreover, enforcement teams collected Rs 3.11 crore in fines, including Rs 23.51 lakh specifically for weight-related fraud.
These numbers demonstrate the government’s intensified efforts to curb unfair trade practices and safeguard consumer interests. In addition, Minister Patra stressed that the department will continue strict enforcement measures. He noted that regular inspections strengthen transparency in the supply chain and reassure consumers about fair practices.
Furthermore, the Assembly discussion highlighted the importance of accountability in trade. Leaders urged traders to uphold ethical standards and warned that violations would invite legal consequences. Finally, the minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring that Odisha’s markets operate with integrity.
