Worst-hit by coronavirus Maharashtra postpones GP polls

Mumbai: Elections to 12,668 Gram Panchayats in Maharashtra were postponed following COVID-19, Rural Development Minister Hasan Mushrif said.

Mushrif in a press release said that a request was made to the State Election Commission through the State Government to postpone the elections.

He said that if Gram Panchayat elections are held, it is likely that many people will gather in public places. Such crowds can be dangerous in the present situation, he added.

The Election Commission has informed the government that where the term of five years expires, the existing executive should not continue in the same manner but should appoint a suitable administrator before the expiry of the term.
