Worker loses leg, two others critical in blast at Damanjodi NALCO plant


Damanjodi: As many as three workers have critically injured and one of them lost his leg in a mishap while carrying out a wielding work at NALCO plant at Damanjodi in Koraput district in this afternoon.

The victims have been identified as Rankanidhi Behera, Trilochan Hial and Gajendra Gouda. The injured workers were hired on a contractual basis by Amulya Constructions.

According to sources, the incident occurred this afternoon when the three workers were opening an old iron gate at the unit. Suddenly, a chemical container kept nearby caught fire leading to a blast. The impact of the explosion was so severe that Behera’s right leg got severed.

Locals and other staff immediately rushed them to NALCO hospital in Damanjodi for treatment. Later they were shifted to a private hospital in Vishakhapatnam as their condition deteriorated.

Irate over the incident, the labour association of Damanjodi had demanded compensation for the injured persons, sources said.
