Woman set ablaze over dowry in Deogarh; hubby & father-in-law held


Deogarh: Police have arrested the father-in-law and husband of a woman who was burnt to death alive at Padianali village under Barkote police limits on Sunday night over dowry demand.

Barkote Police arrested the accused father-son duo identified as Rabi Sahu (70) and Netrananda Sahu (40) within 24 hours on charges of killing, Aswini Sahu, by dousing her with kerosene and setting her on fire alive. A case (126/20) under Sections 498-A/302/34 of IPC and Section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act against the accused duo.

According to police, on May 24 at about 11.20 PM, the accused tied the woman with a saree and lifted her towards the backside field of their house with holding kerosene oil in a plastic jar and a matchstick box. They mercilessly committed murder by setting her on fire after dousing her with.

Hearing the victim’s scream, the neighbouring couple, who happen to be the woman’s sister-in-law and brother-in-law, arrived at the spot. But they failed to rescue Aswini from the fire as her body was completely burnt by then.

After surviving for 7 to 10 minutes, the victim breathed her last citing the name of her husband Netrananda Sahu and father-in-law Rabi Sahu, responsible for crime, informed Sub Inspector Rajendra Mahapatra, OIC, Barkote PS, the investigating officer of the case.
