Woman burnt to death by husband, in-laws for dowry in Mayurbhanj


Mayurbhanj: A married woman was allegedly charred to death by husband and her in-laws for failing to meet their dowry demand in Lakhanasahi village under Khunta police limits in Mayurbhanj district today.

The deceased was identified as Mandakini.

According to sources, Mandakini had some quarrel with her husband Dhananjaya regarding dowry matter. In anger, Dhananjaya poured kerosene over her and set her on fire.

Today morning, Dhananjaya called up Mandakini’s family and informed them that she committed suicide by setting herself on fire. Soon her family members rushed to Dhananjaya’s village and alerted police.

The family members of the deceased complained that their daughter was killed by her in-laws as they failed to meet their dowry demand.

Notably, Dhananjaya and Mandakini had married 10 years ago and they have two children. Earlier she had been tortured repeatedly by the in-laws and husband for dowry.

Acting on the complaint, Udala police registered a case and detained Dhananjaya for interrogation.
