West Bengal: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday stated that the state government, led by the Trinamool Congress, would offer shelter to individuals from Bangladesh affected by violence if they seek refuge.
Amidst heavy rainfall in Kolkata, the Trinamool Congress chief delivered a speech at the grand ‘Martyrs’ Day’ rally organized by the Trinamool Congress.
“I cannot speak anything about Bangladesh as it is another country. The Indian government will speak about that. But if helpless people (from Bangladesh) knock on Bengal’s door, we will provide them shelter. There is a resolution of the UN. Neighbours will respect refugees,” Mamata Banerjee said.
Bangladesh authorities have enforced a strict nationwide curfew, and military personnel are patrolling parts of the capital, Dhaka. This action follows violence that erupted over the allocation of government jobs, resulting in over 40 fatalities and hundreds of injuries.
Mamata Banerjee also praised Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who attended the event, for his party’s performance in the Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh.
“The government at the Centre won’t last long. This is not a stable government and will collapse soon,” she said.
“The ‘Khel’ (game) you played in UP should have forced the BJP government (in UP) to resign, but the shameless government is continuing in power by misusing agencies and other means,” the Trinamool Congress chief added.
During the rally, Akhilesh Yadav stated, “The people of Bengal have battled against the BJP and surpassed them, a similar event occurred in Uttar Pradesh… The individuals occupying the government seats in Delhi are there for merely a few days. ‘Woh sarkaar chalne wali nahi hai, woh sarkaar girne wali hai’ (that government is not going to endure, it is destined to collapse soon).”
