Paris: Following her disqualification from the gold medal bout at the Paris Olympics 2024, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat suffered from dehydration and was immediately hospitalized on Wednesday.
Phogat faced a significant setback as she was deemed ineligible to participate in the 50kg women’s wrestling final for exceeding the weight limit, as confirmed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
The IOA announced that Phogat’s weight exceeded the permissible limit for the 50kg category in which she was competing at the Paris Summer Games. The association has requested privacy as they support Vinesh Phogat during this challenging period.
The Indian Olympic Association reportedly filed a complaint with the International Committee regarding the decision to disqualify Vinesh Phogat from the gold medal match against Sarah Hildebrandt of the USA.
After her disqualification, Vinesh Phogat began to dehydrate, prompting the medical team to rush her to the hospital. Reports indicate that the Indian grappler did not sleep the entire night after qualifying for the final, striving to shed the extra weight to be eligible for her first Olympic final.
Having gained 2kg after three bouts, Vinesh Phogat had to lose it overnight to meet the 50kg category requirement. However, during the weigh-in on Wednesday, Phogat was found to be 100 grams over the limit, leading to her disqualification from the final.
Vinesh Phogat’s remarkable run at the Paris Olympics ended in disappointment with her disqualification from the gold medal match in the women’s wrestling freestyle 50kg category.
She began her campaign with a victory over the reigning Olympic and World no.1 Yui Susaki of Japan in the pre-quarterfinals, advancing to the quarterfinals.
It was a monumental upset in wrestling history as Vinesh became the first wrestler to defeat Susaki at an international level. Before facing the Indian grappler, Yui Susaki had remained unbeaten.
