Laxmipur: Scores of people under the banner of Jholaguda Village Development Committee at Laxmipur block of Koraput district today staged a demonstration against NALCO over various issues.
According to sources, the villagers have alleged that periphery work is not being carried out at several villages affected after the establishment of the industrial unit and the youths of the area are left unemployed.
They said that the tribal people are also left with no agricultural activity due to the operation of the industry in the area. As a result, they are facing several issues including the education of their children. With no options left, the villagers have resorted to protest to apprise the authorities about their plight.
When asked, the villagers said: “35 years have passed since the operation of NALCO’s Damanjodi unit but the utter neglect in ensuring our development by the authorities has forced us to stage protest”.
On intimation about the protest, five senior officials from NALCO along with Laxmipur tehsildar Madhumita Pamelakar, Laxmipur SDPO Ashwini Nayak, Laxmipur PS IIC Gourahari Sahoo, Kakrigumma PS IIC Dhiren Patnaik reached the village and discussed the matter with the agitators.
During the meeting, it was discussed that priority will be given towards the establishment of schools & cremation grounds, and construction of pucca roads. Besides, the authorities have also assured that unemployed youths will be given placements in phases.
After assurance from the company officials in front of the local administration, the villagers agreed to postpone their strike with a warning that, if their demands are not fulfilled soon they would continue their protest.
