UTP’s ‘suicide’ in Puri Jail: Petition in OHRC seeks impartial probe

Puri: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has received a petition seeking an impartial probe into the alleged suicide of an undertrial prisoner (UTP) in Puri district jail on March 3.

Petitioner Prasanna Kumar Dash has urged the OHRC to order appropriate action to find out whether the under-trial committed suicide or was killed by someone inside the jail premises.

Dash, the convener of social outfit Sachetan Nagarik Manch, in his petition said: “The district jail is under tight security with round-the-clock CCTV surveillance. But, the jail authorities failed to ascertain when the prisoner committed suicide in a toilet”.

The petitioner has also alleged that the jail authorities have turned a blind eye to the safety of prisoners. Dash apprised the rights body that many inmates of the district jail are going through depression. But the jail authorities are yet to arrange proper counselling for them.

Notably, Seikh Akbar Mehmood (28), an under-trial prisoner in an abduction and rape case, was found hanging inside a toilet at the district jail March 3.
