US ‘terminating relationship’ with WHO amid COVID pandemic: Trump

Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced the United States will be terminating its relationship with the World Health Organization. US president accused WHO of failing to adequately respond to the coronavirus because China has ‘total control’.

“China has total control over the World Health Organization,” the president said while announcing measures aimed at punishing Beijing.

Washington will redirect funds to other bodies, he said.

“Because they have failed to make the requested and greatly needed reforms, we will be today terminating our relationship with the World Health Organization,” Trump told reporters on Friday.

US contributes about $450m to the WHO while China provides about $40m, adding that the US will be “redirecting those funds to other worldwide and deserving urgent global public health needs”, Trump added.

The US is the global health agency’s largest single contributor, providing more than $400m (£324m; €360m) in 2019.

More than 102,000 people in the US have lost their lives to Covid-19.
