Hyderabad: Telangana’s ruling TRS party emerged as the largest party as votes were counted on Friday in the high-stakes Hyderabad municipal election.
However, BJP’s massive surge after an exceptionally high-voltage and divisive contest stunned political leaders.
The BJP, which mounted a campaign that was unusually aggressive for any local election, has taken second place in a close fight with the AIMIM of Asaduddin Owaisi.
The ruling Telangana Rashtriya Samithi (TRS) on Friday reclaimed the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) after winning the civic body polls with 55 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) finished runner-up with 48 seats while Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM followed closely with 44 seats.
Meanwhile, it was yet another disappointing performance for Congress as the party managed to win just two wards in the 150-ward Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
