Tokyo faces 4th emergency as Covid cases surge

Tokyo: Japan’s government put Tokyo under its fourth Covid-19 state of emergency on Monday in an effort to contain a resurgence in coronavirus infections, local media reported.

With the measure to last until August 22, a period that will cover the duration of the Tokyo Olympics, the government aims to curb the movements of people.

However, a commuter told Nihon Keizai Shimbun that the trains in Tokyo were “as crowded as they were before the declaration”.

The Tokyo government plans to suspend the provision of alcoholic beverages at restaurants. They have been allowed to serve drinks until 7pm.
