Chennai: The voting for the Tamil Nadu urban local body polls commenced at 7 am and will end at 6 pm. As many as 57,778 candidates are in the fray for 12,607 posts of ward members in 648 urban local bodies.
The main parties in the fray include the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the BJP and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM).
Around 1 lakh police personnel have been deployed today in addition to other arrangements to ensure peaceful and fair elections.
Out of the 31,150 polling stations, the critical/ vulnerable have been identified and additional security arrangements have been made accordingly.
More than 2.79 crore residents, including 1.42 crore women, 1.37 crore men and over 4,300 from the third gender, are eligible to vote. Those having COVID-19 symptoms will be allowed to vote between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m, according to the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC).
The Tamil Nadu State Election Commission announced the schedule for the polls last month. Among the local bodies where elections will be held are 21 municipal corporations, 138 municipalities and 490 town panchayats.
Counting of votes will commence on February 22 in 268 centres.
