Lukhnow: Indian shuttler Sameer Verma retained his title and won the final, while his compatriot Saina Nehwal suffered a defeat in the Syed Modi International Championships in Lucknow on Sunday.
In the men’s singles final, Sameer registered a 16-21, 21-19, 21-14 win against his sixth-seeded Chinese opponent Lu Guangzu with the score of 16-21, 21-19, 21-14.
While in the first game Sameer struggled to score points and eventually lost the game at 16-21, the Indian made a comeback in the second game with 21-19.
In the decider set, Sameer started slowly and managed to build the point gap by mid break at 11-10. Sameer maintained a healthy gap and eventually won the third game 21-14.
In the women’s singles, Saina suffered defeat as she lost to Han Yue of China in straight games of 18-21, 8-21.
In the men’s doubles finals, the Indian pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost 11-21, 20-22 to Indonesia’s Fajar Alfain Muhammad Rian Ardianto.
In the women’s doubles final, Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy lost 15-21, 13-21 to Malaysia’s Chow Mei Kuan and Lee Meng Yean.
