Sambalpur: While Odisha is fighting against the second wave of the deadly coronavirus, a suspected black fungus death has been reported from Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla.
This has been informed by the superintendent of the healthcare facility, Lal Mohan Nayak.
“The patient was hospitalised 5-6 days back & passed away last night. The patient had symptoms of black fungus but clinical examination can not be performed as the patient was in ICU,” Nayak said.
The Odisha government had earlier declared mucormycosis as a notifiable disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897.
On May 10, the Odisha government had announced that the first case of mucormycosis, commonly called ‘black fungus’, has been detected in the state.
Mucormycosis (Black Fungus) is caused by a group of moulds called mucormycetes that usually are found throughout the natural environment. It often affects the sinuses, lungs, skin, and brain.
