New Delhi: A recent survey conducted by Local Circles has unveiled a grim reality for residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). The survey indicates that every household in the region has at least one member suffering from health issues directly linked to the severe air pollution that has plagued the area.
The survey highlights that 75% of families in Delhi-NCR have members experiencing sore throats or persistent coughs. Additionally, over 50% of respondents reported headaches, while half of the families have members suffering from asthma or breathing difficulties due to the toxic air quality. The number of households reporting pollution-related ailments has doubled within a month, underscoring the escalating health crisis.
In response to the hazardous air quality, many families are taking measures to protect their health. Approximately 27% of families are using air purifiers, staying indoors, and increasing their intake of immunity-boosting foods and drinks. Meanwhile, 16% of families have either traveled or plan to relocate temporarily to cleaner areas.
The severe air pollution has prompted authorities to invoke Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Measures include a ban on diesel-powered vehicles, restrictions on non-essential trucks entering Delhi, and a shift to online classes and work-from-home arrangements for schools and offices2. Despite these efforts, the Supreme Court has criticized the Delhi government for delays in enforcing these measures, expressing concern over the health impacts on residents.
As Delhi-NCR continues to grapple with hazardous air quality, the survey’s findings serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for effective pollution control measures. The health of millions of residents hangs in the balance, with immediate action required to mitigate the adverse effects of air pollution.
