New Delhi: The Supreme Court has agreed to hear plea on Central Vista project work following demand from opposition and activists on the issue.
The opposition members and activists argued that the ambitious project work during the spike of deadly coronavirus cases in the country is not the right thing to do when scores of people are dying due to shortage of oxygen. They urged the court to direct the authorities to stop work on the project immediately.
Reports said senior advocate Sidharth Luthra had urged the Chief Justice of India to take up the plea against a Delhi High Court order. Worthwhile to mention that the construction work for Rs 20,000 crore project has been earmarked as “essential services”.
Construction work in the national capital is allowed at the sites where workers are given on-site accommodation. But media reports said not many were found camping at the Central Vista construction site. It was found that majority of workers are coming from 16 km away.
The project received an environmental clearance which paves way for a new home for the Prime Minister to be completed by December 2022. The Vice President’s house is expected to be completed by May next year.
The Central Vista envisages a new triangular parliament building and a common central secretariat. The three-km-long Rajpath from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate is also being revamped.
