Students protest SU election cancellation, dozens detained

Bhubaneswar: Tension ran high in the capital city after scores of students protested against the cancellation of the students’ union election.

The angry students alleged that the elections were deliberately cancelled even though there were no reports of violence on the campus.

Reportedly, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the BJP, also staged a demonstration in front of Higher Education Minister Arun Sahoo’s residence.

However, the agitation intensified after a scuffle erupted between the students’ body and the police personnel deployed at the spot. Cops also detained over 30 students, in order to prevent any untoward situation.

Notably, the State Higher Education Department has decided not to conduct students’ union election in the degree colleges and state universities across Odisha this year.

Instead of holding students’ union poll, the Higher Education department has decided for the nomination of students’ representatives to various bodies of universities/colleges.
