State Level Annual Flower Show 2019 From Tomorrow
Bhubaneswar: The two-day State Level Annual Flower Show 2019 will be held from tomorrow in the premise of Botanic Garden of RPRC here in the city.
The flower show is organised by the Regional Plant Resource Centre and Plant Lovers’ Association (PLA), Bhubaneswar on second Saturday and Sunday of January every year since 2006.
The Annual Flower Show is being organised with the support of NALCO and the Directorate of Horticulture, Odisha on January 12 and 13.
On this occasion, Bijayshree Routray, Minister, Forest & Environment, inaugurated a Modern Tissue Culture Laboratory in the premise of RPRC and dedicated this facility to the farmers of Odisha.
This state-of-the-art laboratory has an annual production capacity of 5.0 lakh banana and orchid plants through tissue culture. Suresh Chandra Mahapatra, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Forest & Environment Department, and Rebecca Nayar, IFS, PCCF & Chief Executive, RPRC and Sri K. Murugesan, IFS, Director, Environment were also present during the inaugural function.
The Forest & Environment Minister also inaugurated a Water Fountain installed in the Botanic Garden of RPRC for the visitors.
Later, Routray inaugurated the State Level Annual Flower Show, 2019 and visited the cut flower section, flower arrangements, floral displays, Bonsai, Rangoli, Vegetable carving, Plant Bazaar, Nurseries and exhibition stalls etc.
He also released 8 (eight) books, booklets and brochures brought out by Regional Plant Resource Centre, Bhubaneswar. Sri Suresh Chandra Mahapatra, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Forest & Environment Department, Government of Odisha, Smt. Rebecca Nayar, IFS, PCCF & Chief Executive, RPRC, Sri K. Murugesan, IFS, Director, Environment, Sri Khirod Pattnaik, President, Plant Lovers’ Association and other dignitaries attended the function. An attractive “Floral Gate” has been set up at the entry point, which has become a major attraction for the visitors.
A “Plant Bazaar” has been organised at the venue of the show, where ornamental, flowering plants, seeds, seedlings, garden tools and implements, fertilisers, pesticides are being made available to the public at a reasonable cost. Moreover, nurseries and seed firms, exhibition stalls have been opened by the Directorate of Horticulture, Odisha, Ekamra Vana etc.
A total of 26 nurseries have exhibited ornamental plants for sale in 30 open spaces. This year, a “Bonsai” section has been introduced and more than 100 miniature plants are on display.
The Plant Lovers’ Association also organised a “Garden Competition” in the Capital city of Bhubaneswar to encourage the residents for raising Gardens and growing plants to add to the beauty of the City. This year over 70 entries for Garden competitions in different categories have been received. The Association also organised a Painting and Poster Competition among school children and more than 500 children from different schools of Bhubaneswar have participated.
The winners of Garden and Painting competitions will be awarded prizes and trophies in a function to be held at 4 PM on 13th January 2019. Dr. Sandeep Tripathy, IFS, PCCF (Wildlife) will be the Chief Guest of the function and give away prizes to the winners of Garden and Painting competitions. Sri Ajit Bharthuar, IFS, Retd. PCCF & Special Secretary, Forest & Environment Department, Government of Odisha will be the Guest of Honour.
This year, more than 500 numbers of entries have been received in Potted Flowering, Foliage, Cut Flower, Flower Arrangement, Group Display, Bonsai, Rangoli, vegetable carving and other categories. The winners under different categories will be awarded prizes and trophies in a function to be held at 4 PM on 13th January 2019.
Dr. Tapan Kumar Chand, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, NALCO will grace the occasion as Chief Guest and give away prizes. Dr. B. K. Upadhyaya, IAS, Director of Horticulture, Odisha will be the Guests of Honour. Mrs. Rebecca Nayar, IFS, PCCF & Chief Executive, RPRC and Sri Khirod Pattnaik, President, PLA will also attend the ceremony.
As in the past, about 1,00,000-1,50,000 visitors are expected to visit the Flower Show during these 2-days. Entry to the Botanic Garden is free for these two days and free parking inside the garden is provided for the visitors. The visitors will soak in the ambience created with beautiful landscape, sprawling lawns, greenery, a picturesque lake with migratory birds and enjoy the childrens’ corner and boating in Ekamrakanan Lake.
All scientists, staff, students, and workers of RPRC, office bearers and members of PLA have put in their best effort to make this State Level Annual Flower Show, 2019, a success.
