Keonjhar: A woman and her grandchild were mowed down by a speeding truck near Bankamaruni village on the NH-20 in Keonjhar district on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Sumitra Mohanta (36) and her one-year-old grandson Subham of Bankamaruni village under Palaspanga Panchayat.
According to reports, some villagers were sitting near the NH roadside this evening. Meanwhile, a speeding truck coming from Padmapur towards Palaspanga hit the woman, who was sitting on the verandah of her house on the roadside carrying her toddler grandson on her lap.
While the baby died on the spot, a critically injured Sumitra was rushed to the Keonjhar Hospital in an ambulance. However, she succumbed to the fatal injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
On intimation, Palaspanga police reached the spot and seized the truck while detaining the driver. A case of unnatural death has been registered at Keonjhar Sadar PS in this regard, sources said.
A pal of gloom descended over the village following the tragic death of the woman and the baby boy.
