Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Thursday issued a letter directing all District Education Officers (DEOs) and Collectors to form special squads in order to ensure implementation of the Centre’s guidelines regarding the reduction of weight of school bags.
The Department has instructed the district authorities to form special squads to carry out the inspections and submit a report by the end of September.
As mentioned in the letter, the teams will include police officials, Block Education Officer, District Child Protection Officer and an NGO worker.
The squads will also conduct surprise visits to schools.
Besides this, the officials will be authorised to check whether the books used in schools have been recommended by the National Council of Education Research & Training (NCERT) and State Council of Education Research & Training (SCERT).
Notably, the move came after reports of some students in English medium schools are not following the rules.
Weight of school bag (As per the order):
- Class I and II: Should not be above 1.5 kg
- Classes III to V: 2-3 kg
- Classes VI-VII: 4 kg
- Classes VIII-IX: 4.5 kg
- Class X: 5 kg
The circular stated, “All the Schools under Department of Education is hereby directed to strictly comply with the following instructions with immediate effect.”
