Nabarangpur: Superstition regarding branding of children to cure them of common ailments refuses to stop in tribal-dominated Nabarangpur district with similar instances of branding of as many as 23 children coming to fore in Papadahandi block of the district recently.
The children were branded with hot iron rods by their family members on the occasion of Chitalagi Amavasya for their good health, sources said.
The shocking incident took place at Khatarasahi of Papadahandi block in the district. All the children are newborns and below the age of 10 years.
According to sources, the family members of the children performed certain religious rituals on the occasion of Chitalagi Amavasya and branded the children with the hot iron with the belief that it would ensure good health for them in future.
The seven-month-old daughter of Ghasiram Sahu, who was branded along with the other children, fell ill recently. Later, the local angawadi worker took the infant to the hospital.
Notably, the branding of children to cure them of diseases is not uncommon in the district. In July this year, two children died after being branded with the hot iron in Papadahandi block.
Former collector Rasmita Panda had launched an awareness campaign named Jyoti to create awareness among people against the branding of children. However, the superstitious practice continues unabated in the district.
