Senior journalist Ravish Kumar bags Ramon Magsaysay Award
Manila: Senior Indian journalist Ravish Kumar on Friday was awarded Ramon Magsaysay Award 2019, referred to as the Asian version of the Nobel Prize.
It is the highest honour given to Asian individuals and organisations.
Kumar was awarded for “harnessing journalism to give voice to the voiceless”. The 44-year-old Kumar is NDTV India’s senior executive editor and is among the country’s most influential TV journalists.
The award citation described Kumar as a sober, incisive and well-informed anchor who has been highly vocal on insisting that the professional values of balanced, fact-based reporting be upheld in practice.
Ravish, who joined NDTV in 1996, anchors ‘Prime Time’ on NDTV India.
Many took to Twitter to congratulate Kumar and appreciated him for his reports that they said provided a voice to the voiceless. #RavishKumar is also currently trending on Twitter.
The four other winners are Ko Swe Win from Myanmar, Angkhana Neelapaijit from Thailand, Raymundo Pujante Cayabyab from Philippines and Kim Jong-Ki from South Korea.
