Senior Journalist Basant Das Passes Away; Odisha CM Condoles Demise


Bhubaneswar: Veteran journalist Basant Das passed away due to Covid-19 while undergoing treatment at a Covid Hospital in Bhubaneswar. He was 81.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday expressed grief on the demise of the internationally acclaimed journalist.

“Das has earned a name as a columnist and political analyst. He was active in the journalism profession for more than half a century. He will be remembered for his contribution to the field of literature and journalism,” said Patnaik.

The Chief Minister conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family and wished that the departed soul rests in peace.

Born on January 2, 1940, in Maindipur village under Biridi block of Jagatsinhgpur district. He moved to Cuttack after his primary education and completed his matriculation from Peary Mohan Academy and BA from Christ College.

He completed his Post Graduation in Political Science from Utkal University in Bhubaneswar. While pursuing an LLB in Madhusudhan Law College he was attracted to journalism.

A documentary capturing his life and achievements was released in 2015 to commemorate the 75th anniversary and the Golden Jubilee of his celebrated journalistic career.

Known for his recent book ‘Political History of Modern Odisha’, he had written 16 books including Odisha Sahitya Academy Award-winning book ‘Je Desh Jai Se Phala Khai’, Footprints Of Eventful Days, Platinum Jubilee Of Odisha Politics, etc.
