New Delhi: The Supreme Court has sought Centre’s response on Uttar Pradesh Shia Waqf Board chairman’s plea to ban green flags with crescent and star.
The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Friday asked the Centre to file its reply within two weeks.
The Shia Waqf Board chief Syed Waseem Rizvi has sought a ban on green flags with crescent and star which resembles those with Pakistani’s political party, Muslim League.
Rizvi in his petition has argued that such green flags hoisted predominantly in Muslim dominated areas are potential enough to “flare passions, tensions”.
Rizvi has asserted that these flags are hoisted with impunity at buildings and religious places across the country.
The demand to ban these green flags is not new. Union Minister Giriraj Singh had sought a ban on them during the recently held general elections.
