SC orders CBI probe into Barabati stadium land row, debars Ashirbad from OOA election


Cuttack: The Supreme Court (SC) today ordered the CBI to probe into land grab allegations in Barabati Stadium premises. The apex court also debarred Ashirbad Behera from contesting in Odisha Olympic Association (OOA) election.

SC bench comprising Justice Deepak Mishra and Justice PC Pant have ordered for CBI probe into the land row in the stadium premises and financial transactions. It has also directed Cuttack district administration to take control of 23 shops those were constructed illegally.

Notably, the 22-acre land was allotted to OOA for construction of Barabati Stadium by the State government in exchange of Re 1 under a lease deed during 1949-1950. However, after being elected as Secretary of the association, Ashirbad Behera, took possession of the government land unlawfully that was being used for parking purpose. Later on, Ashirbad dealt with Icon Associates following which the company built Barabati Palace and 23 shops in the stadium premises.

Reacting to SC’s order, Ashirbad said, he has no interest in contesting election for any post of OOA.
