SC: No cops should enter Jagannath temple with weapons and shoes

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that no policeman should enter the Jagannath temple in Puri with weapons and shoes.

The ruling came after the apex court took note of October 3 violence in Puri during a protest against the introduction of the queue system for devotees in Jagannath temple.

During today’s hearing, the Odisha government appraised the top court that at least 47 persons have so far been arrested in connection with the unrest during Puri bandh.

Reportedly, nine police personnel were injured in the violence that broke out during the dawn to dusk bandh called by Sri Jagannath Sena.

Notably, the 12-hour bandh called by Jagannath Sena opposing the queue system at the Jagannath temple on October 3 took an ugly turn as the agitators hurled stones at the residences of the revenue minister and police official and ransacked the office of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA).
