SC to hear Odisha’s plea on Mahanadi water sharing row on August 2

Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing on the injunction suit filed by Odisha Government against the Chhattisgarh government over non-release of water from the upper catchment area of the Mahanadi River to August 2.

On December 2016, the State government had moved the apex court seeking justice over the illegal construction of barrages in the Mahanadi upstream.

The neighboring states are already at logger heads over the sharing of Mahanadi water as the river is regarded as the lifeline of Odisha. The Chhatisgarh government was alleged for not allowing free flow of the river by closing Kalma Barrage gates earlier.

The Naveen-led BJD government had filed the injunction suit in the Supreme Court under Article 131 of the Constitution.

Earlier, the Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti had called a Chief Ministerial level meeting in New Delhi, but nothing came out of it with both sides sticking to their guns.
